A greeting from Hugh and Ann by Hugh and Ann by Hugh and Ann from Hugh and Ann

Dear Gerry

Congratulations on your 75th birthday. We hope you have a great weekend in the Killyhevlin with your family.

Our abiding memory is the week we all spent together at Muirfield. Gerry Jnr arranged accommodation in the university close to the castle where we discovered the delights of the Witchery and Ensign Ewart.

The golf was planned by going to the Open in the morning and playing golf in the afternoon or vice versa. Prior arrangements, with Building Providers (Butterly Bricks) by you and Tennants from Hugh's connections, meant we enjoyed hospitality lunches and drinks and had somewhere to go if it rained or we wanted to enjoy TV coverage.

We discovered a golf course, shown on a map, at Portobello. It turned out to be a 9 hole municipal course. The person in the kiosk told me the cost was £4.40. I gave him £20 expecting £2.40 change. I received £15.60 back! It was £4.40 for all four. This was on Sunday and when we returned on Wednesday it only cost £3.60. The weekday rate was 90p and £1.10 at weekends. Gerry, you always had an eye for a bargain!

We also remember the many outings we had together, particularly at Fortwilliam, and returning to Colinton gardens to discuss the world's problems with the help of large doses of firewater and electric soup. Shoes off, feet up, bottles on the table.

Many thanks to Rosemary and yourself for many years of friendship and generosity.

Sincerely yours
Hugh and Anne Rafferty
